This week saw pop singer and talk show host Kelly Clarkson recall being hospitalized during both of her pregnancies.Â
BuzzFeed reported that Clarkson’s comments came on Monday as she and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton denounced pro-life legislation.
Clarkson: It “was my decision” to have children
“I have been pregnant twice, hospitalized both times,” Clarkson told Clinton. “I mean, literally, I asked God — this is a real thing — to just take me and my son in the hospital the second time because I was like, it’s the worst thing.”
“To make some women go through that — whew,” the singer continued before emphasizing that it “was my decision” to have children.Â
“And I’m so glad I did. I love my babies. But to make someone…you don’t realize how hard it is,” Clarkson went on to declare.
BuzzFeed noted this this is not the first time Clarkson has spoken of having difficult pregnancies, as the recording artist told Ellen DeGeneres in 2013 that she would “vomit a good dozen times a day.”
Attempt to repeal Arizona abortion law fails
Clarkson and Clinton then proceeded to condemn the Arizona Supreme Court for upholding a 19th century law which bans abortion except when a mother’s life is at risk.
“I feared it would happen, but I hoped it wouldn’t happen,” Clinton said. “The danger to women’s lives, as well as to our right to make our own decisions about our bodies and ourselves, is so profound…there’s a kind of cruelty to it.”
Phoenix’s Fox 10 reported that a motion to vote on repealing the 1864 law failed on Wednesday after it failed to gain enough Republican support.
State Rep. Matt Gress was the sole GOP member to side with Democrats on the issue, and he argued that an abortion ban does not fit with Arizona’s values.
“We need to get that taken care of and get it taken care of as soon as possible. I think the eyes of the nation are on Arizona,” Gress was quoted as saying.
Data conflicts with Clinton’s claim
Interestingly, there is data that seems to conflict with Clinton’s claim that abortion restrictions are a “danger to women’s lives.”
According to figures compiled by the World Banks, Malta, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Poland all have lower rates of maternal mortality despite abortion being banned or heavily restricted in each of those countries.
What’s more, a study published in the British Medical Journal found that women who abort face a higher risk of suicide than those who carry their pregnancies to term.
