Russell Brand “took the plunge” and was baptized on Sunday in the Thames, which was met with rejoicing from prominent voices like Candace Owens.
Some users on X, however, shared their doubts. Brand addressed both camps Monday in an update video on his baptism.
“The truth is this, as a person in the past who has taken many many substances and always been disappointed with their inability to deliver the kind of tranquility, and peace, and even transcendence that I always felt I’ve been looking for, something occurred in the process of baptism,” Brand said in the circulated clip.
“Overwhelming… I felt changed, transitioned… I feel as if some new resource within me has switched on,” he added.
The news of Brand ‘s baptism was notably met with a lot of praise, along with some doubt because of how celebrities who start following Christ oftentimes end up falling away.
“Please keep Russel Brand in your prayers,” lamented one account on X. “As he approaches his Baptism, and immediately afterwards, he is going to be under heavy attack from the enemy.”
“There will be those who tempt him, doubt him, resent him, trip him up, fight over his denomination,” the account continued.
Other accounts were more critical following the news, with some calling the baptism a “grift” and a move that lacks sincerity.
Brand also addressed these concerns in his message on Monday. “So many of your comments have been so beautiful and encouraging and I really appreciate it. And also, even the cynicism, I understand. Because some people will just see me as a celebrity,” he said.
“But I don’t see me as a celebrity, because I was me when I was a little boy, I was me when I was a junkie, I was me when I was poor. I’ve been me in all of the different phases. But I recognize that anything in this terrain, in the sort of social media world could be exploited and utilized,” he added. “For me, I’ve made the decision and I know what the decision is … I’m so grateful to be surrendered in Christ.”
Resist The Mainstream reported over the weekend on Candace Owens’ response to Brand’s decision to get baptized.
“Just learning that [Russell Brand] is getting baptized. This is amazing. God is at work,” Owens shared on X. “Difficult to put into the words the spiritual urge I felt last year— an overwhelming understanding that it was and forever has been a holy battle of eternal Good vs. evil.”
Brand initially said he wanted to get baptized because he was told it’s “an opportunity to die and be reborn” and “to leave the past behind and be reborn in Christ’s name.”
He also addressed the cynicism over his decision to be baptized over the weekend, explaining, “I know a lot of people are cynical about the increasing interest in Christianity and the return to God, but to me, it’s obvious.”
“As meaning deteriorates in the modern world, as our value systems and institutions crumble, all of us become increasingly aware that there is this eerily familiar awakening and beckoning figure that we’ve all known, all of our lives, within us and around us,” he continued. “To me it’s very exciting.”
