Texas Sends National Guard To Help Police Arrest Illegal Immigrants On State Charges

Austin, TX – Texas Governor Greg Abbott is deploying the National Guard to the state’s southern border to help law enforcement officers arrest illegal immigrants breaking state law.

Abbott has declared a disaster in multiple border counties as illegal immigrants continue to flood into the state under President Joe Biden’s nearly-nonexistent immigration enforcement policies, The Texas Tribune reported.

A staggering 188,829 people tried to cross over the southwestern border in just the month of June alone, surpassing the record 180,641 who tried to make their way into the U.S. in May, according to the paper.

“To respond to this disaster and secure the rule of law at our Southern border, more manpower is needed — in addition to the troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and soldiers from the Texas National Guard I have already deployed there — and DPS needs help in arresting those who are violating state law,” Abbott told Major General Tracy R. Norris of the Texas Military Department in a letter on Tuesday. “I hereby order that the Texas National Guard assist DPS in enforcing Texas law by arresting lawbreakers at the border.”

It is unclear how many troops will be deployed.

Small law enforcement agencies in some Texas counties said the influx of human smuggling and drug activity in their communities has overwhelmed their resources, The Texas Tribune reported.

Abbott told the DPS in June to start arresting illegal border crossers on state charges.

The Briscoe Unit prison in Dilley has been converted into a jail to hold illegal immigrants.

Thirty people were being held at the facility as of Monday, and all had been arrested on charges of suspicion of criminal trespass, The Texas Tribune reported.

“When people start learning about this, they’re going to stop coming across the Texas border because they’re not getting the red-carpet treatment that they’ve been getting from the Biden administration,” Abbott said during a recent FOX News interview.

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) attorney Kate Huddleston said the Texas governor’s latest order is “unusual and extremely troubling,” Military.com reported.

“We are concerned for asylum seekers and other migrants who are coming to the United States, and also we are concerned for border residents who have borne the brunt of this law enforcement saturation on the border in the past and are doing so again,” Huddleston declared.

Spokespersons for the Texas National Guard and Abbot’s administration did not return requests for comment, Military.com reported.
