Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) lauded a Black Lives Matter activist who had previously called for the death of law enforcement officials.
The story: Bush made the comment during a speech on the House floor last week. She reportedly mentioned Palestinian-American activist Bassem Masri who filmed himself lambasting and taunting police outside the Ferguson Police Department as part of protests that followed the death of Michael Brown Jr.
Brown Jr. was a teenager who was fatally shot by the police in 2014 in Missouri. Masri, who was arrested during the protests, died in 2018, before the recent Black Lives Matter protests that took occurred during the summer of 2020.
What he said: In one of the videos he posted on social media Masri said: “I’m praying for your death and your death and your death and your death.” Footage from the protests reportedly showed him pointing at police officers.
When asked why he said he wished death to police officers, Marsi explained: “Ah you know what, that`s like I say, that`s emotions, but like I say, I`ll state that again, that`s their job. Instead of me asking why I`m mad, you should ask the police why they`re not doing their jobs.”
Separately, he tweeted the “Pigs in a blanket, fry ’em like bacon” remark which became part of the anti-police rhetoric.
What Bush said: The congresswoman labeled Marsi a “St. Louis Palestinian.”
“As a Palestinian, he was ready to resist, to rebel, to rise up with us as our St. Louis community mourned Mike Brown, Jr.’s state sanctioned murder, and as we demanded an end to the militarized police occupation of our communities,” Bush said during her speech, according to Fox News. “Palestinians know what state violence, militarized policing, and occupation of their communities look like.”
“So, when heavily militarized police forces showed up in Ferguson in 2014, Bassem and so many others of our St. Louis Palestinian community, our Palestinian siblings showed up too,” Bush added.
The fight for Black lives and the fight for Palestinian liberation are interconnected.
We oppose our money going to fund militarized policing, occupation, and systems of violent oppression and trauma.
We are anti-war. We are anti-occupation. And we are anti-apartheid. Period. pic.twitter.com/DO42FEre0W
