Mitt Romney Rebukes GOP Attempt To Downplay Jan 6 Insurrection

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) is not interested in going along with lies from his fellow Republicans about what actually happened at the Capitol on January 6, when Trump supporters stormed the building and tried to forcibly stop the formal Congressional certification of Joe Biden’s election victory.

Stunningly, at a recent House hearing, Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) claimed that there was “no insurrection,” adding that footage that he has seen from amid the Capitol rioting looked like “a normal tourist visit.” In reality, roving Trump supporters brutalized police officers and murderously hunted top government figures. Some 140 officers were left with injuries ranging from spinal issues to a stab wound inflicted by a metal fence stake, and Trump supporters who were at and around the Capitol that day chanted of their desire to “hang Mike Pence!” because of his perceived lack of loyalty to the Trumpist cause. And Clyde is willing to go on record comparing what happened to a “normal tourist visit”?

Romney pointedly commented as follows:

‘I was there. What happened was a violent effort to interfere with and prevent the constitutional order of installing a new president. As such, it was an insurrection against the Constitution that resulted in severe property damage, severe injuries and death.’

Romney was one of a total of 17 Congressional Republicans who formally pinned responsibility on Trump for the violence and supported his post-riot impeachment in either chamber of Congress. That total includes 10 Republicans in the House who voted in favor of impeaching Trump on a charge of incitement of insurrection and 7 Republicans in the Senate who voted in favor of convicting Trump on that same charge.

At present, those in the GOP who are willing to give space to the lies from Trump about the integrity of the 2020 presidential election appear to outnumber those in opposition. In recent days, House Republicans voted to remove Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) from a position in party leadership after she consistently expressed public opposition to the rigged election lies.
