A new poll from the Heritage Foundation reveals that voters in swing states are increasingly concerned at the prospect of sending additional aid to Ukraine, and want the U.S. government to focus on border security, as the migrant crisis rages on under the Biden administration, and millions of illegal immigrants flood into the nation.
The poll, first obtained by the Daily Caller, was conducted between April 2-4, and gave 1000 swing voters across the battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin a choice between sending more aid to Ukraine or protecting the southern border.
Swing voters aren’t strongly aligned with either political party but have an outsized impact on elections, reported the Daily Signal, the Heritage Foundation’s news and commentary outlet.
The voters were also asked about their knowledge of the situation, and the best approach to handling both situations.
The poll revealed that 10% of the participants are “very closely” following news about the war in Ukraine, 41% are “somewhat closely” following it, 36% are “not very closely” following it, and 13% are “not at all closely” following it, while 1% were “not sure.”
22% of poll participants say they were “very closely” following news about border crisis, 42% said they are “somewhat closely” following it, 24% say they are “not very closely” following it and 11% say they are “not at all closely” following it.
Voters were then asked which of the two issues were more important to deal with. 50% of participants said that securing the southern border was more important, 11% it is more important to provide funding to Ukraine and 29% said it is equally as important to secure the border as it is to provide funding to Ukraine.
Additionally, 54% of respondents said they believe directing funds to secure the border outweighs financing the war effort in Ukraine. Conversely, 23% advocate equal allocation of funds to both causes, while a mere 10% support allocating more money to Ukraine than to border security.
“Swing voters are sending a resounding message: Prioritize border security before further commitments abroad,” Pollster Scott Rasmussen told The Signal. “The overwhelming opposition to allocating additional funds to Ukraine without addressing our own border concerns underscores the urgent need for policymakers to listen to the electorate’s priorities.”
“Everyday Americans are fed up with rubberstamping the Swamp’s endless Ukraine funding. Heritage’s latest polling reveals that not only are moderate voters in battleground states more interested in securing our own borders, they believe we have already spent enough helping Ukraine—and rightfully so,” said Dr. Kevin Roberts, president of The Heritage Foundation, in a statement to the Caller.
“The United States has already sent more than $113 billion in aid to Ukraine with no debate, no clear strategy, no spending offsets, and no real accountability. Alarmingly, two separate Pentagon audits reveal that large tranches of this funding are mostly unaccounted for. That’s unacceptable,” Roberts added. “Not a single U.S. taxpayer dollar should be going to Ukraine until our own borders are secure, Biden proposes a coherent strategy for ending the conflict, and full accountability for past and future funding secured. The American people know they deserve better and expect policies—and leaders—that put their country first. Congress would be wise to listen to them.”
