The following article, Cheney Fires Back at Trump Just Minutes After Losing Leadership Role, was first published on Flag And Cross.
In what may be the clearest signal yet that the Republican Party’s civil war is heating up, Liz Cheney emerged just moments after being embarrassingly ousted from her leadership role and took aim at Donald Trump in a big way.
Cheney, a Wyoming Republican who has long been unwilling to pledge herself to the MAGA wing of the GOP, was removed from her higher positions within Congress in order to be replaced by someone who has, (just recently), aligned themselves with former President Donald Trump. This, just hours after the Congresswoman delivered an incendiary speech on the floor of the Capitol, in which she described The Don and his followers as a threat to democracy.
When Cheney’s ouster was final, Trump took a victory lap, trashing the anti-Trump lawmaker from just about every possible angle.
All this did was conjure a renewed defiance within The Cowboy State legislator.
“Going forward, the nation needs a strong Republican Party,” she said at a defiant presser after the vote. “The nation needs a party that is based upon fundamental principles of conservatism and I am committed and dedicated to ensuring that that’s how this party goes forward and I plan to lead the fight to do that.”
Then came the hammer.
A reporter then noted that Trump may end up back in the White House in 2024, asking Cheney if she was prepared to prevent that.
“I will do everything I can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office. We have seen the danger that he continues to provoke with his language,” Cheney said. “We have seen his lack of commitment and dedication to the Constitution. And I think it is very important that we make sure whomever we elect is somebody who will be faithful to the Constitution.”
Cheney may have some help waiting in the wings as well, with a number of prominent Republicans now threatening to form a third party in order to distance themselves from the MAGA masses.
