Unsurprisingly, the United States is a global leader in firearms production. In 2021, over 13.8 million firearms were manufactured in the United States, as reported by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The top five companies that are the leaders in arms manufacturing are all U.S.-based – Lockheed Martin, Raytheon Technologies, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, and General Dynamics. And America’s two largest gunmakers – Smith & Wesson and Ruger – account for nearly a third of all domestic gun production. (Here is a complete list of America’s largest gunmakers.)
In 2021 alone, there were over 3,200 federally licensed gunmakers in the U.S. and while these companies are spread out across the 50 states, American firearm manufacturing is heavily concentrated in certain parts of the country. (These 13 states have multi-billion dollar gun economies.)
24/7 Wall St. identified the states making the most guns by using data from the ATF. We ranked each of the 50 states by total firearm production in 2021 – which ranges from fewer than 10 to over 2.4 million.

Methodology
To identify the states making the most guns, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. States are ranked by total firearm production in 2021.
Supplemental data on the number of gunmakers operating in the state, the company that manufactures the most guns by state, and firearm production by type is also from the ATF and for 2021.
We also reviewed state level data on the economic output of the firearm and ammunition industry and the number of jobs directly supported by the industry from the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a firearm industry trade association. All NSSF data is for 2022.
