Despite speculation that he will serve only one term, President Joe Biden has insisted he intends to run for reelection in 2024 and reports indicate his team has already begun to lay the groundwork for that anticipated effort.
Part of effort involves opposition research on potential opponents, and word is that Biden’s team has expanded beyond just normal politicians to potential unconventional candidates like Fox News host Tucker Carlson, according to Breitbart.
The outlet noted that the reported inclusion of Carlson in the opposition research efforts suggests that Democrats truly think the popular populist-leaning conservative Fox host presents a serious political threat to Biden.
Opposition research already underway
Politico was the first to report on the opposition research effort being run from inside the White House by a team of around 25 people that is expected to eventually expand to as many as 50.
The team is being led by a Democratic operative named Nick Bauer and features several other prominent operatives for the Democratic Party. The entire effort is being overseen by Biden’s deputy chief of staff Jen O’Malley Dillon, who also served as Biden’s 2020 campaign manager.
The report indicated that the “oppo” team has already begun digging for dirt on about 20 different Republican politicians and has identified as many as 49 potential candidates who could make a run for the GOP nomination.
Politico noted that the list of those being researched contains some predictable names, such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, as well as some rather unexpected names, such as Fox’s Carlson as well as Mike Lindell of MyPillow.
The Hill published a similar report that confirmed the initial reporting from Politico by way of two unnamed sources said to be “familiar with the matter.”
That confirmation includes the assertion that Carlson is among those being scoured by Democratic operatives.
That outlet published the same potential candidates listed by Politico but also threw out a few more names said to be under the gaze of the Biden research team, including Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Josh Hawley (R-MO), and Rick Scott (R-FL), as well as former Vice President Mike Pence and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Will Trump run or not?
Of course, much is contingent upon whether former President Donald Trump decides to run for reelection, in which case the expected broad field of potential GOP candidates is anticipated to shrink significantly.
As for Carlson, while it remains to be seen if he would even entertain making a run for the presidency, it is equally unclear if, in the event he did decide to run, whether he would bow out in favor of Trump or challenge the former president.
