George W. Bush uses the Washington Post to make a push for amnesty

Former President George W. Bush is, once again, pushing for amnesty.

Bush, this past week, published an op-ed in the Washington Post calling for “a path to citizenship” for “dreamers.”

The article is called, “Immigration is a defining asset of the United States. Here’s how to restore confidence in our system.”

“Fundamentally American”

In his op-ed, Bush spent a lot of time trying to convince readers that amnesty ought to be granted to dreamers – those children who were brought to America by their illegal immigrant parents.

“Americans who favor a path to citizenship for those brought here as children, known as ‘dreamers,’ are not advocating open borders,” Bush wrote.

Bush argued that recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) amnesty are “fundamentally American,” writing “they ought not be punished for choices made by their parents.”

Elsewhere in the article, Bush granted that giving amnesty to the millions of illegal immigrants currently residing in the United States would be “fundamentally unfair.” He, however, said that he still favored amnesty for those illegal aliens who “earned” citizenship. He explained that by this he meant those illegal immigrants who can show proof of their work history, who have paid a fine and back taxes, who are able to speak English, who know American history, and so on.

In addition to amnesty for illegal immigrants, Bush also said in the article that he supports increasing legal immigration.

Background

Many readers will likely remember that Bush, along with the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and late Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA), made a push for amnesty back in 2007.

That effort failed as the proposed bill only received the support of 33 Senate Democrats, 12 Senate Republicans, and 1 independent. Bush has referred to this as one of the biggest disappointments of his two terms in office.

Bush’s latest amnesty push comes as he is going around promoting his new book, “Out of Many, One.”

The book is billed as “a powerful new collection of stories and oil paintings highlighting the inspiring journeys of America’s immigrants and the contributions they make to the life and prosperity of our nation.”
