Pres. Biden caves to the far-left on refugee cap

President Joe Biden once again caved to the far-left.

The New York Times reports that Biden on Friday committed to expanding the U.S.’s refugee cap after earlier in the day saying that he wouldn’t.

This whole situation started on Friday with the New York Times putting out a report indicating that the Biden administration, in the words of the Times, “will keep its cap on refugee admissions at the low level set by the Trump White House.”

By Donald Trump’s final year as U.S. president, the U.S. refugee cap, that is to say, the number of refugees that the government allows into the country, dropped to 15,000. Some of that drop was the result of Trump’s immigration policies and some of it was the result of coronavirus restrictions.

But, what Biden promised, upon becoming president, was that he would raise that refugee cap, significantly. Biden, in fact, told Congress in February that he expected to raise the cap to 62,500 by the end of this fiscal year and to raise it to 125,000 by the end of the next fiscal year.

Biden, however, didn’t follow through on this promise. What the Times initially reported was that Biden never signed the paperwork necessary to put this policy change into effect, meaning, in other words, that he was maintaining the cap at the 15,000 mark set by Trump.

The backlash

Following this initial report from the Times, several Democrats decided to public criticize Biden. Among them, were Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ilhan Omar (D-MI).

“Completely and utterly unacceptable,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote. “Biden promised to welcome immigrants, and people voted for him based on that promise.”

She continued: “Upholding the xenophobic and racist policies of the Trump admin, incl the historically low + plummeted refugee cap, is flat out wrong. Keep your promise.”

As a refugee, I know finding a home is a matter of life or death for children around the world,” Omar wrote. “It is shameful that @POTUS is reneging on a key promise to welcome refugees, moments after @RepSchakowsky @RepJayapal myself and others called on him to increase the refugee cap.”

Biden caves

In response to this criticism, the White House, later in the day on Friday, announced that Biden expects to increase the refugee cap by next month.

The administration, however, did not provide any specifics, such as how many refugees will be let in.
