It is one of the most severe recorded cases of abuse in the federal capital. At least 17 suspects are being investigated for the repeated rape of a twelve-year-old girl. According to reports, the crimes began at the beginning of 2023 and lasted for months. In numerous instances of mass rapes, up to eight suspects, some of whom were children, attacked the child victim in various locations. These included a parking garage, multiple stairwells, a central train station, and the Viennese apartment of a 15-year-old boy’s parents.
Mass rapes filmed with cell phones
On Thursday morning, the police conducted raids on numerous apartments in Vienna, which led to the arrest of several suspects. Notably, these suspects were children arrested in their own bedrooms within their parents’ homes. The suspects mainly comprise children and young people aged between 13 and 18, with mainly migration backgrounds. The report mentions seventeen arrests. The “Nursery Gang” is said to have documented the brutal rapes on numerous smartphone videos.
The victim is Austrian, while the suspects include Turks, Bulgarians, Syrians, a Serb, an Italian, and Austrians (reported to have a migration background). Four of the 17 accused are still under the age of criminal responsibility.
Victim was ‘passed around like a trophy’
The starting point of the twelve-year-old victim’s ordeal is said to have been her first boyfriend. He first forced her to perform sexual acts; then, she was “passed around like a trophy” among his friends. Cell phone videos show the young girl desperately begging for the attackers attacking her to stop.
The migrant suspects blackmailed her with recordings taken of the gang rapes between February and June 2023. One of the then 15-year-old perpetrators texted her: “Well if you give me a blow job. I’ll delete the video too.” In one of the clips, she can be seen being abused by up to eight young people and is heard shouting: “Stop it!”
For a prolonged period, the young victim concealed the brutal attacks from her parents, driven by a combination of shame and fear. Eventually, she found the courage to reveal the details of the crimes to her mother.
The police major disclosed that all the perpetrators were already known to the authorities, though not for sexual offenses. Their previous engagements were primarily related to property damage and theft.
Suspects show no remorse
According to “Krone,” all 17 suspects have now been released from police custody and are reported to be at large. There is said to be no remorse among the “nursery gang” and no sense of guilt.
Some suspects have confessed, while others deny or refuse to testify. Emir, the youngest, is only 13. Umut, the oldest, is already of age. The police consider the now 16-year-old Ahmad as the main perpetrator. He had used force to compel Mia to have sex in the parking garage on Maria-Lassnig-Straße.
If charges are brought against the group, the very young suspects could each face up to five years in prison. The case tragically echoes the situation of the late 13-year-old Leonie, who was brutally raped and killed by three Afghan men in 2021. Her dead body was found next to a tree in Vienna.
