Social media plays a major part in the American democratic process these days.
Some candidates spend millions to try to bolster their online and digital presence.
But Mark Zuckerberg may have just done the unthinkable to try and defeat Donald Trump.
Donald Trump’s latest comments could change social media
In 2021, then-President Donald Trump voiced his support for an all-out ban on the wildly popular social media app TikTok.
TikTok has become very popular with young people, in particular, as it allows them to pump out new content rapidly in the form of brief and eye-catching video clips.
However, using TikTok comes at a price, given that its parent company, Bytedance, is Chinese and has direct ties to the communist Chinese government.
Moreover, TikTok allegedly has very invasive data tracking features, which many have suggested could create far-reaching national security problems.
Despite Donald Trump’s support for a TikTok ban in the past, it appears that Donald Trump has made an about-face.
Last Thursday, Trump posted on Truth Social, saying, “If you get rid of TikTok, Facebook and Zuckerschmuck will double their business. I don’t want Facebook, who cheated in the last Election, doing better. They are a true Enemy of the People!”
This post came just moments after lawmakers advanced a measure known as the “Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,” which would give the Chinese-owned Bytedance company five months to sell TikTok if they hope to operate in the United States.
As soon as Donald Trump made his post on Truth Social, Meta stock shares dipped sharply, closing at just under $515 a share last Friday and dipping down to just over $480 a share Monday morning.
Almost immediately, bizarre examples emerged and went viral of Meta companies like Instagram cracking down on traditionally left-leaning and/or “woke” posts in what appears to be an attempt to curry favor with Conservatives.
For example, a post on Instagram depicting two gay men with a baby received flags for “graphic” & “upsetting” content despite the men not saying or wearing anything graphic.

Nonetheless, on Monday, Donald Trump spoke to CNBC about Meta, saying, “The thing I don’t like is that without TikTok, you can make Facebook bigger, and I consider Facebook to be an enemy of the people, along with a lot of the media.”
He added, “I think Facebook has been very dishonest. I think Facebook has been very bad for our country, especially when it comes to elections.”
Meta has since climbed back up to roughly $500 a share as of Wednesday; however, this still falls well short of where they stood before Donald Trump’s post last Thursday.
Donald Trump just showed just how powerful of a force he can be
Trump’s Truth Social post last Thursday not only demonstrated Trump’s changed opinion on TikTok but also how powerful a force he still is.
With one post, Donald Trump sent Meta stock reeling, even if the dip was temporary.
As far as a TikTok ban is concerned, lawmakers have toyed with the idea for years to no avail.
But this week, the House Republicans passed legislation to do just that. Only time will tell if Senate Republicans agree to side with Trump, or if they’re ready to hand leftist-controlled social media platforms like Facebook a major win.
