Kevin Costner is shifting his focus from “Yellowstone” to his new project, “Horizon: An American Saga.” Fans are left wondering if his character, John Dutton, will appear in the final season of “Yellowstone.”
In an interview, Costner revealed his uncertainty about returning for the show’s last season. He expressed his love for the series, having hoped to make seven seasons but currently stopped at five. He hopes to return but acknowledges the complexity due to multiple ongoing projects at Paramount Network.
“I’d like to be able to do it, but we haven’t been able to — I’m not sure how it’s being worked out,” Costner said.
“I’ve loved making that series. I made five seasons of it. I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five. So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on.”
A spinoff led by Matthew McConaughey is in the pipeline, but the final “Yellowstone” season’s production is still on hold. Costner remains hopeful about his return, pending his comfort with the future direction.
The fifth season’s first part highlighted tensions between Dutton and his son Jamie. Rumors swirled about Costner’s unlikely return for season five’s second half, with speculated production disputes and a writers’ strike causing delays.
In court, amidst a legal battle with his ex-wife, Costner discussed the challenges of juggling “Yellowstone” with his work on “Horizon.” He disclosed a $24 million deal for seasons five through seven, complicated by scheduling conflicts.
Despite these challenges, Costner has thoughts on how Dutton’s story should end, though he admits it’s ultimately up to the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan. He shared his ideas with Sheridan, hoping they align with the show’s conclusion.
