Gunman Who Killed Judge’s Son Had Justice Sonia Sotomayor Targeted

Supreme Court Justices, like any other high-ranking government official, have to be extremely careful, and have ample security, just because of the job they do.

If people did not know that before they certainly should now, after a judge, whose son was killed by a gunman, said that the man who attacked her family had his eye on Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor too, CNN reported.

US District Court Judge Esther Salas said during an interview with “60 Minutes” that the information was found in a locker owned by the attacker Roy Den Hollander.

“They found another gun, a Glock, more ammunition. But the most troubling thing they found was a manila folder with a workup on Justice Sonia Sotomayor,” she said.

“Who knows what could have happened?” she said. “But we need to understand that judges are at risk. That we put ourselves in great danger every day for doing our jobs.”

A spokesman for the Supreme Court said that it could not comment on the report as it does “not discuss security as a matter of court policy.”

Chief Justice John Roberts did not comment on this particular situation but he did comment after then-Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer made, what many considered threats, to Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch on the steps of the Supreme Court in 2020.

“This morning, Senator Schumer spoke at a rally in front of the Supreme Court while a case was being argued inside. Senator Schumer referred to two Members of the Court by name and said he wanted to tell them that ‘You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You will not know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.’ Justices know that criticism comes with the territory, but threatening statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous. All Members of the Court will continue to do their job, without fear or favor, from whatever quarter,” he said.

That came after Sen. Schumer said “I want to tell you Gorsuch. I want to tell you Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions,” he said.

The bottom line is very simple: we will stand with the American people. We will stand with American women. We will tell President Trump and Senate Republicans who have stacked the court with right-wing ideologues, that you’re gonna be gone in November and you will never be able to do what you’re trying to do now, ever, ever again. You hear that over there on the far-right? You’re gone in November,” he said.

The New York senator explained himself at the time and admitted that he should not have used the words that he did.

“I should not have used the words I used,” the senator said. “They didn’t come out the way I intended,” he explained, and added “my point was that there would be political consequences for President Trump and Senate Republicans if the Supreme Court, with the newly confirmed justices stripped away at a woman’s right to choose.”

“I shouldn’t have used the words I did, but in no way was I making a threat, I never, never would do such a thing,” he said.
