I noticed this first when the Premier appointed Preston Manning to chair a panel to review Covid policy. She was unconcerned at the time that she was hiring a very conflicted man given his ongoing involvement with the National Citizens Inquiry. Additionally , the panel did not hold public hearings, did not travel the Province to allow citizens to become engaged. And no input on the terms of reference and the Legislature was ignored.
Now we see the Premier and her Cabinet proposing major changes to Municipal Legislation . The process by which this is happening is questionable at best: Introducing what you want to do and then seeking input. Should it not be consultation first and then proceed or not?
Where is the legislature in all of this . Rubber stamp??
The Canadian Press carries a story on the backlash to this move. In the article a University professor writes about what he sees as a growing authoritarian streak in the Provincial Government and he gets a lot of reaction . I quote :
“In my two decades of research, I haven’t seen this sort of reaction to anything I’ve written,” Wesley said in an email.
“It’s not just the volume, but the variety of people reaching out. From the left and the right. CEOs to retirees, rural folks and city folks. All of them upset at what a growing number of Albertans are seeing: a government bent on consolidating power.
“You can feel the groundswell, and MLAs are hearing it, too.”
It is one thing to argue protection and fight against Federal Power in areas of Provincial jurisdiction but is it not a little hypocritical to yourself start acting like the Federal Government in the exercise of your Provincial power?
