A Minneapolis felon was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison this month for illegal possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney Andrew Luger.
Details in the case filed last year against Ramone Trayvil Johnson, 30, said that on June 18, 2023, Minneapolis police officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation about 2 p.m. on the 3400 block of Bryant Avenue North.
Police made contact with the victim, who stated that Johnson had attempted to rob him inside of Johnson’s vehicle because the victim had owed Johnson money for an Xbox. While discussing the situation, Johnson pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the victim, who was able to get out of the car and run. As he was running, Johnson began shooting at the victim, and Johnson then fled the scene on foot.
It was later determined that Johnson used a Zastava semi-automatic pistol to shoot at the victim, who was not struck. Law enforcement recovered Johnson’s driver’s license and cellphones from inside his car. Later that evening, Johnson was a passenger in a car that was pulled over on a traffic stop in Anoka County. The driver was ultimately arrested, and the car was towed. The car was searched and the Zastava pistol was discovered. Law enforcement located and arrested Johnson. Based on ballistic testing, the gun was determined to have been used in the attempted robbery of the victim on Bryant Avenue. The gun was also found to have DNA material that was consistent with Johnson’s DNA.
Johnson, who is described in prior court documents as a Minneapolis gang member, has several prior felony convictions, including two cases as an adult for felon in possession of a firearm, and transferring a pistol to a person under 18, as well as juvenile convictions on felon in possession of a firearm and two counts of second-degree assault.
Johnson pled guilty in December to one count of felon in possession of a firearm. His sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release.
