Anti-Israel protests at a prestigious Ivy League school have now grown to the point where a Hamas tent city has sprung up on the grounds of Columbia University and it’s not going away anytime soon.
Over the weekend, hundreds of tents sprung up on the lawn at the New York City institution of higher learning like poison mushrooms as the atmosphere has become one of increasing menace toward Jewish students who have been warned by the school’s Rabbi to stay away for safety reasons.
The encampment has grown since Thursday’s NYPD arrest of more than 100 activists after being given the ok to clear the campus by Columbia University President Minouche Shafik, drawing howls of anger from leftists, including Democrat “Squad” member Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), and protesters are only getting bolder.

“We are looking for our demands, and we are going to continue that,” one Hamas tent city dweller told the New York Post on Sunday. “We are here forever. We’re here as long as [it takes till] Columbia meets our demands.”
“This has been going on for five days, this is Day 5,” the protester said.
The “demands” include Columbia divesting from Israel which is currently engaged in a bloody war with the terrorists who attacked the Jewish state on October 7, 2023, slaughtering over 1,200 people in civilian areas, many with primitive savagery.
Sickeningly @Columbia is allowing the Hamas supporters to stay encamped and even be comfortable with tents for another WEEK. While Jewish students have been attacked and advised to stay away from campus. Absolutely disgusting pandering. pic.twitter.com/6YnOfd8Zuk

“There are people sleeping here, we eat our meals here. The people who are fortunate enough to not have gotten suspended, they also go home to get more materials. We have runners. They are grabbing us stuff and being very supportive,” she told the outlet. “We have an entire community here that’s willing to help us. This is a community, it’s a camaraderie.”
If the presence of NYPD last week was intended to be a deterrent, it appears to have backfired.

“I’m very concerned with some of Columbia’s actions,” Rep. Bowman said during a Friday virtual press conference, the day after the arrests. “They seem to be folding to pressure from a right wing Congress’ weaponizing of the unfolding events in the Middle East as a means to suppress fundamental freedoms of expression.”
The atmosphere has become so threatening to Jewish students that New York City Mayor Eric Adams condemned it and vowed that the NYPD would arrest lawbreakers.
“I am horrified and disgusted with the antisemitism being spewed at and around the Columbia University campus. Hate has no place in our city, and I have instructed the NYPD to investigate any violation of law they receive a report about and will arrest anyone found to be breaking the law,” Hizzoner said in a post to X, formerly Twitter.

“We will not be a city of lawlessness, and those professional agitators seeking to seize the ongoing conflict in the Middle East to sow chaos and division will not succeed,” Adams added.
“Students do not have permission to set up tents on the lawn. Those who do are in violation of long-standing university policy and will be identified and subjected to disciplinary action,” a Columbia University spokesperson said.
