Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, misinformed a group of high school students in Houston that the moon is a “planet” that is “made up mostly of gases.”
Jackson Lee, who once led the House Science Committee’s space subcommittee, made several false statements that stunned a crowd of teenagers at Booker T. Washington High School during Monday’s solar eclipse.
“You’ve heard the word ‘full moon,’” Jackson Lee told the students who were with her on a sports field before the eclipse. “Sometimes, you need to take the opportunity just to come out and see a full moon is that complete-rounded circle, which is made up mostly of gases. And that’s why the question is: Why or how could we as humans live on the moon? Are the gases such that we could do that?”
“The sun is a mighty powerful heat, but it’s almost impossible to go near the sun. The moon is more manageable,” the Democrat lawmaker wildly declared.

Lee is being widely mocked for her jaw-dropping comments. To top it off, several people are pointing out that she has served on both the House Science Committee and the House Space Committee.
Shamed by the mockery, Lee then tried to blame it all on the Republicans.
“Obviously I misspoke and meant to say the sun, but as usual, Republicans are focused on stupid things instead of stuff that really matters. What can I say though, foolish thinkers lust for stupidity!” Lee declared in a follow-up post on social media.

Still slamming those evil Republicans, Lee claimed, “They should be focusing on issues like prenatal care, building more affordable housing, and more reduction of student loan debt as President Joe Biden is.”
“Also, I care more about these children who would not have experienced the eclipse in this enthusiastic manner. And, I care more about protecting the rights of women and children than engaging in this kind of senseless dialogue!” she sneered.

Below is just a sampling of the backlash she’s getting:
She just said the moon is a planet and made of mostly gasses. Can you believe she once led the House Science Committee’s space subcommittee??? This is what Democrats have wrought on America. Something to ponder before heading to the polls in November!

The moon is NOT a planet.
— Mike (@Mike_Cycles) April 9, 2024
Well whadda you know. All this time I thought the moon was made of cheese.

If someone put out this as a satire/parody of her, it would be considered in bad taste, they would be called racist, and anti-female. She actually said this… And gets re-elected. What does that tell you about her voters? And our election system?

So the moon is made up of mostly gasses? What kind of drugs are you on? Or are you just that freaking stupid? There are no gasses at all on the moon you freak!!!

This is Yale University graduate, a fourteen term United States House of Representatives member, and a former Ranking Member of the Space and Aeronautics subcommittee. She thinks the moon is a planet. @Yale @JacksonLeeTX18 https://t.co/cs0YTPPQiC

Lee’s claim that she just “misspoke” is prompting even more backlash:
You very clearly thought the moon was made of gases lmao. Your full sentence would make even less sense if you meant to say sun instead of moon there.

How are these misspoken words?
“A full moon is a complete rounded circle, which is made up mostly of gases…..How could we as humans live on the moon? The gas is such we can do that.”
Rep Jackson – I meant to say the sun.
My goodness. This is a hell of an attempt to spin.

How we gonna live on the sun, Sheila???

Your “clean up” is just as bad as your earlier comment.
— Wile E. Coyote (@Florida_Veteran) April 9, 2024
No, you didn’t. You were directly speaking about the full moon and it being made of gas.

A Congresswoman on both the House Science Committee & House Space Committee is this ignorant on basic science?
And she’s making laws & regulations for us to follow. Unreal.#SheilaJacksonLee https://t.co/q1FcxhfDmU— Kemp (@kempmat27) April 9, 2024
