Poll: Most Americans oppose activist demands to abolish, defund police departments

As protests against police brutality have spread nationwide in the wake of George Floyd’s death last month, activists have called for a wide range of reforms within the law enforcement system.

While some argue certain police agencies should be defunded or completely abolished, a new poll shows such advocates represent a small minority of the overall population, as Breitbart reported.

More than half of the respondents to an online poll by The Economist and YouGov said that they opposed the idea of substantially defunding police departments. About three in four expressed disagreement with the notion of abolishing law enforcement agencies altogether.

Unpopular across political lines

The survey included responses submitted by 1,500 individuals between June 14-16 and has a roughly 3.5% margin of error.

Of the far-left proposals included in the poll, abolishing all police was the least popular. Only 11% of those polled were in favor of the idea while 73% were opposed. Another 16% said they were unsure.

Even among Black and Hispanic respondents, ostensibly those most at risk of violence during an encounter with police, were overwhelmingly opposed to the idea. Respectively, just 22% and 20% wanted to abolish the police compared to the 55% and 51% who did not.

Breaking the results down along ideological lines, about 19% of Democrats supported abolishing the police and 63% were opposed. The numbers showed slightly more support among respondents who described themselves as liberals.

About 7 in 10 independents and 9 in 10 Republicans opposed the idea.

“There’s not going to be any disbanding”

While the results were marginally better for those arguing to defund police, it remained a minority position across the board. Less than one-quarter of those polled support the idea, with more than half opposed, and another 24% unsure.

As many top Democrats — including presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden — distance themselves from the calls to take funding away from law enforcement, it seems that both parties understand how unpopular the proposal is among the electorate at large.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump vowed that there “won’t be dismantling of our police, and there’s not going to be any disbanding of our police” under his administration.

With civil unrest giving way to violence and property damage in communities across the nation, it seems unlikely that demands to defund or disband police are likely to catch on with a majority of the American people any time soon.
