Senate Judiciary chairman vows to hear testimony from Obama-era officials over origins of ‘Russiagate’

Supporters of President Donald Trump have long called for answers from former Obama administration officials who they have accused of trying to spy on Trump’s 2016 campaign and sabotage his presidency. Now, it looks like Republicans are one step closer to justice.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) reiterated on Thursday his vow to hold hearings in his Senate Judiciary Committee on alleged misconduct in the Obama Justice Department, Breitbart reported.

Graham’s promise

The promise from the Senate Judiciary chairman came during an interview on Thursday with conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt.

In a “yes” or “no” format, Hewitt rattled off a list of names of top officials who appear to have been heavily involved in the anti-Trump operations of the outgoing Obama administration in 2016 and early 2017.

Those officials include former FBI Director James Comey and his top deputy, Andrew McCabe, as well as former CIA Director John Brennan and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper — all of whom Graham indicated would be subpoenaed to testify before his committee.

Also mentioned by Hewitt were former National Security Adviser Susan Rice and her top deputy at the NSA, Ben Rhodes, though Graham was non-committal with regard to those two and suggested that he would need to confer further on that with Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), who is chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee.

“Senator Johnson’s going to look at all the things that happened from the election to transition,” Graham said, according to Breitbart. “His committee’s going to look at all that.”

Looking ahead

Graham’s comments come after months of assurances from the Republican senator that he would work to hold former Obama administration officials accountable for what turned into a months-long special counsel probe that turned up no evidence of wrongdoing against the president.

And yet, such hearings have yet to be held. One potential reason for the seemingly interminable delay on Graham’s part is the fact that there are ongoing investigations into these matters elsewhere — namely, by U.S. Attorney John Durham, who was appointed by Attorney General Bill Barr to “investigate the investigators” in May 2019, as The New York Times reported.

That said, there are those who worry that Graham, a career politician who has been friendly with the D.C. “swamp” in the past, has been dragging his feet in an effort to run out the clock and avoid delving into something that could splashback on him and his swampy friends in the future.

Hopefully, that isn’t the case and the oft-promised hearings will indeed take place as advertised in the near future.

After all, justice is at stake.
