The View’s Joy Behar made a provocative assertion on Tuesday regarding Americans who endorse Donald Trump through his ubiquitous Make America Great Again caps, stating they “might as well put a swastika on the hat.”
The co-host’s remark elicited immediate criticism from guest Bill Maher, who argued against the notion of branding half the nation as Nazis.
Behar’s remark came as the show’s panel discussed a now-deleted video shared on the Trump campaign’s social media platform, which featured a video template reminiscent of vintage newspapers from World War I and II.
One controversial moment in the video is when a newspaper headline is briefly displayed referencing a “unified Reich,” to which Behar directed her criticism towards individuals donning MAGA hats.
“By the way out there, that hat that you keep wearing, that red hat that says ‘Make America Great Again,’ that tells people that you go along with this, so you might as well just put a swastika on the hat,” Behar stated to the audience.
Maher, in a candid moment during the episode, firmly expressed his stance: “I’m not gonna defend Donald Trump, ever, but I would never say that we should put the swastika on the cap because I think you can hate Donald Trump, [but] you can’t hate everybody who likes him.”
Maher highlighted the divisive nature of current discourse, emphasizing, “It’s half the country. I don’t want to live in a country where I hate half the country, and I don’t hate half the country.”
Maher extended support to Behar: “Joy is a wonderful human being and she should not be afraid that people are going to attack her because she said the thing about the swastika on the cap.”
He then reiterated her sentiment, “As you said to me in the break, you do not think that all the people who are for Trump are Nazis.”
The BBC reported that the Trump campaign provided clarification following the now-deleted video, stating that the clip had been uploaded by a junior staff member and was not an official campaign video.
The video did not go unnoticed by various mainstream media outlets on Tuesday, who quickly pounced on the opportunity to draw parallels between Trump and Adolf Hitler.
The full newspaper text read: “Industrial Strength Significantly Increased. Driven by the Creation of a Unified Reich.” However, parts of it were blurry and hard to read and decipher.
The original stock footage of the shared clip can be viewed online.
The Biden-Harris HQ X account, for example, posted, “Trump posts a new ad foreshadowing a second Trump term that says he will create a ‘UNIFIED REICH,’ echoing Nazi Germany.”
It also highlighted an instance where Trump refused to talk about the video.
X users swiftly blasted the media’s outcry against the video as misinformation.
“The ‘Unified Reich’ hoax is the latest chapter in a long-running series of misinformation campaigns by democrats and the media,” wrote one user. “ … Nobody on the Trump campaign, and certainly not Trump himself, typed the words in question. They exist in the template at the time of purchase.”
“ … Clearly someone should have been far more diligent, because democrats and the MSM will *ALWAYS* twist and bend every action to go on the attack, but the idea that this is some kind of telegraphing of intent by Trump is the dumbest, most disingenuous take I’ve heard since the last time the media ran a hoax,” he continued.
