He was only 54 years old, but the cause of death for 2004 World Series Champion Dave McCarty has been released.
“Cardiac event.”
Well, assuming that professional athletes are generally in the category of people who take care of their bodies, this is another one of those cases where somebody who seems like they should be healthy has dropped dead recently.
In the case of athletes dying early, it has often just been attributed to vague heart conditions or steroids.
It does seem as though a batch of early deaths in athletes has plagued America ever since a certain vaccine was introduced, but that’s a bit in the weeds for now.
At this moment, friends, family, and fans of McCarty are busy remembering one of their heroes.
The Boston Red Sox released a statement about their outfielder who spent three seasons in Boston.
“Our hearts are heavy with the passing of Dave McCarty. Playing 3 seasons with the Red Sox, he will forever be a part of the curse-breaking 2004 World Series championship team. We send our love to his wife, Monica, and their children, Reid and Maxine,” the team posted online.
Lenny DiNardo, McCarty’s teammate for two seasons in Boston, echoed that sentiment:
“Just awful news. I was happy to be able to spend time with him at our reunion,” the pitcher said on Twitter. “Such a great guy. He’ll be missed. Hug your loved ones.”
It’s always a shame when people like McCarty don’t get told how many people they inspired until after they are already gone.
Whether you’re a Red Sox fan or not, whether you’re a baseball fan or not, we can all agree that Dave McCarty is gone far too soon.
