The Swiss legal system has opened up a criminal investigation against a Libyan imam living in exile Nidau, accusing him of committing welfare fraud.
Abu Ramadan, a 66-year-old imam previously accused of hate speech against Christians, Jews, Buddhists, and Shiites at the Ar’Rahman mosque in Biel, is said to have received more than 540,000 euros in social assistance courtesy of the Swiss taxpayer between 2003 and 2017, Le Nouvellist reports.
Ramadan stands accused of having concealed the arrival of money that would’ve resulted in the reduction of the state benefits he was receiving.
After making repeated trips to his home country, the Swiss government revoked Ramadan’s ‘refugee’ status. The Libyan imam now lives in Switzerland on a C permit – the equivalent of the Swiss permanent residency.
If he is found guilty of the alleged crimes, Ramadan will be deported.
Ramadan’s case is far from unique. In 2017, the German city of Braunschweig created a special commission to investigate over 300 cases of welfare fraud committed by migrants. One migrant is said to have used nearly 12 different identities to cash in on the German taxpayers’ hospitality.
