Representative Mike Gallagher, a Republican from Wisconsin, recently made a surprising announcement:
He’s taking an early retirement from Congress.
Especially because of the razor-thin margins that Republicans are working with, his announcement sent waves of shock throughout the GOP.
Mike Gallagher was speculated to be staying around at least through April 20 or 21 so that he could “stay and support the aid package on” April 20.
Gallagher has served in the House of Representatives for eight years already, despite being relatively young at just age 40.
Some people may have thought that they could have another 30, 40, or 50 years of Gallagher in Congress, but for now, that’s not going to happen.
Hotair.com describes Gallagher as “the youngest committee chairman in recent history. He is a national security and foreign policy hawk. That’s not surprising, given he is a veteran. He served for seven years on active duty in the United States Marine Corps, including two deployments to Iraq.”
Mike Gallagher has been an important figure in Congress, chairing the high-profile Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. He also chaired the Subcommittee on Cyber, Information Technologies, and Innovation.
Gallagher made this retirement announcement back in February, at the time citing his young family and the time he was missing away from his daughters as a result of his duties at work.
At the time, Gallagher said that he would finish his term.
However, Gallagher changed his mind in early March, and at that point confirmed that he’d only be sticking around until about now.
Gallagher revealed that he had been receiving death threats as a result of his retirement, and said that people had been dispatching law enforcement to his house by reporting fake crimes in a tactic known as “swatting.”
“This is more just me wanting to prioritize being with my family. I signed up for the death threats and the late night swatting, but they did not. And for a young family, I would say this job is really hard.”
Republicans probably wish that their people weren’t leaving Congress so often, but there’s no way that Gallagher and his family deserve death threats.
