CHICAGO, IL – A disturbing episode of violence broke out near Chicago’s North Side Red Line stop Tuesday morning, leaving two men seriously wounded, one of whom later died from his injuries. The shooting took place in the Rogers Park neighborhood, on North Glenwood Avenue’s 6900 block.
Chicago Police Department reports revealed that the men, ages 41 and 33, were outside around 11:15 a.m. when an unidentified shooter approached and opened fire on them. Both victims were hit in the back.
The 41-year-old man was rushed to St. Francis Hospital, where he is reported to be in good condition. Tragically, the 33-year-old succumbed to his injuries at the same hospital, significantly worsening their initial critical state.
The older victim managed to stumble into Erik Archambeault’s bar nearby, seeking refuge after the shooting. Archambeault, who owns Rogers Park Social, tended to the victim and shared how he had heard the shots. He voiced his worry about the escalating violence along the Morse-Glenwood corridor, attributing the spike to new inhabitants dealing drugs.
Numerous residents responded to the incident, citing that while it was disheartening, it was not unexpected given rising crime rates. Alderwoman Maria Hadden of the 49th Ward suggests that the violent act was likely targeted, particularly at the victim who tragically lost his life.
The crime scene is also close to another recent fatal shooting site on Morse Avenue, though the two incidents are currently deemed unrelated by the police.
As investigations progress, no arrests have been made yet.
