REPORT: Ocasio-Cortez Endorses Challenger To Moderate, Pro-Life Democrat

Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is endorsing a progressive candidate seeking to oust Rep. Daniel Lipinski, a moderate Illinois Democrat, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

Marie Newman is backed by Justice Democrats, the group that supported Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign in 2018. Newman, a businesswoman, also ran in 2018 against Lipinski and lost by about 2,000 votes. Ocasio-Cortez is walking a fine-line as she seeks to knock off a fellow House Democrat in a blue state.

The article goes on to state the following:

“Marie Newman is a textbook example of one of the ways that we could be better as a party — to come from a deep blue seat and to be championing all the issues we need to be championing,” Ocasio-Cortez told the NYT.

Newman responded to Ocasio-Cortez, tweeting on Tuesday, “Thank you for your support, @AOC! When you dedicate yourself to people—not corporations—we can make government work for everyone. Chip in to strengthen our grassroots movement here in #IL03.”

In a series of Twitter posts on Monday as she announced her policies, Newman declared she wants a path to citizenship for illegal aliens, and called for libraries and post offices to install informational kiosks about pathways to citizenship, to streamline the immigration process.

Newman also called for protections for DACA recipients and updating the Dream Act.
