Alan Ritchson, the star of the Reacher series on Amazon Prime, has once again spoken out against conservative Christians in a recent video.
While Reacher himself is not known for his cuddly, progressive views about politics, the actor who portrays him is taking heat for his criticisms of Donald Trump supporters, who he claims are ignoring their Christian principles in a new video shared on his InstaChurch YouTube channel.
He discussed interpretations of Scripture and how he believes certain Christian groups in America are not living according to biblical teachings regarding treatment of foreigners and the vulnerable.
Ritchson cited a Bible passage to back his views, saying, “Jeremiah 22: 2-3. So, if we go to the prophets, what do they say? ‘Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow.’”
He elaborated on his thoughts by relating these principles to current political behaviors.
“When I think about that, I think about politics. And when I think about this, I think about an entire platform by those who mostly claim to be Christians, who are doing the exact opposite of this with their voting power!”
Ritchson also mentioned the broader implications of Christian teachings.
“This is the kind of generosity that we are called to and it’s for everybody. It’s not just for believers. It’s not just for those who have been indoctrinated into the church. It’s not just for those who are American or fit your nation state or fly your flag. It is for everybody!”
His comments followed earlier criticisms where he spoke about Donald Trump and some law enforcement practices. In an April interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Ritchson remarked, “Trump is a rapist and a con man, and yet the entire Christian church seems to treat him like he’s their poster child and it’s unreal. I don’t understand it.”
He also commented on issues with police accountability, saying, “Cops get away with murder all the time, and the fact that we can’t really hold them accountable for their improprieties is disturbing to me.”
The National Fraternal Order of Police responded to these comments on Facebook, describing Ritchson as “another useless Hollywood actor, virtue signaling for attention at the expense of brave police officers around this country.” Ritchson countered this response on Instagram, stating, “This kind of emotionally immature response is the epitome of what concerns me about law enforcement today. If this is how leadership handles a peaceful disagreement, what does life look like for those unseen interactions in the street?”
In his video, Ritchson reflected on the reactions he’s received, asserting, “If you want to see violence flee the world, be more generous to everybody! That is the Christian ethic! That is what I don’t see happening. And when I speak up about it in my own ways, I’m met with violence.”
The Reacher novels, authored by Lee Child, are a series of thrillers featuring Jack Reacher, a former major in the U.S. Army Military Police Corps. The books have been immensely successful, with millions of copies sold worldwide. This popularity spurred a film adaptation starring Tom Cruise, who appeared in two movies, Jack Reacher (2012) and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016). Fans at the time were outspokenly critical of the casting of the diminutive Tom Cruise in the titular role, but they were appeased by Ritchson’s casting in the television adaptation Reacher, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video in February 2022. Standing at six feet and three inches tall, Ritchson is a much closer physical match for the titular character, whose giant stature is often remarked upon in the the novels.
