Former Rep Tony Cornish (R-23B) signaled his intent to run for his old House seat according to an article in the Mankato Free Press. Cornish resigned in 2017 amidst serious accusations of sexual misconduct with multiple women, including a lobbyist and a Democrat legislator. His departure also led to mandatory sexual harassment training at the Capitol.
House District 23B is a rural district made up of parts of Blue Earth, Le Sueur, Watonwan and Waseca counties.
Following Cornish’s resignation, a special election was held and won by Rep Jeremy Munson. So far, Munson has made a name for his self as a reliably conservative voting member of the Minnesota House and ardent supporter of conservative healthcare reform.
Munson is one of the few A-rated legislators according to the recent scorecard of the conservative group Action 4 Liberty. Despite being a new legislator he was able to pass a health care price transparency bill in his first year at the Capitol despite being in the minority.
Cornish, a left-leaning Republican, appears to be unhappy with the conservative record of Munson. If Cornish does decide to run, House District 23B will be the battleground between what many consider the GOP war between the Establishment and the Conservatives.
Munson suspects that some Republican legislators will back Cornish in the race. “I think it’s really going to be the race of the swamp against me,” he said.
