Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra may be preparing to leave the Biden administration after the November election for a chance to be the next governor of California.
The potential departure was discussed in private conversations between Becerra and Democratic officials and operatives, according to Politico. Becerra would enter the California gubernatorial race in 2026 — the end of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D-CA) term.
On Tuesday, Becerra spoke in San Francisco about the current state of healthcare in the U.S. The HHS secretary was asked by a Politico reporter about his plans to run, and he waffled on an answer.
Below is an excerpt from Politico:
“I miss California,” Becerra said at the start of a talk at Manny’s in the Mission, a watering hole for political types. Becerra later smiled and nodded silently when someone in the audience yelled “governor!” as he paused between questions.
When asked by POLITICO after the event if he planned to run, Becerra sidestepped the question.
“It’s a blessing to hear that someone is saying that I’m running for governor because I don’t know who they are,” Becerra said. “I am secretary of HHS and, by law, I have to be secretary of HHS and nothing else. So I’m gonna do my job as best I can. It’s a thrill, I think my mom would be happy to hear that someone thinks I can run for governor as well,” he said.

Becerra, 66, is a far-left Democrat and career politician. His previous positions include:
- 1980 – 1992: Member of California State Assembly
- 1993 – 2017: Member of U.S. Congress
- 2017 – 2021: Attorney General of California
- 2021 – present: U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services
Becerra continuously has raged against former President Donald Trump from the very beginning of Trump’s campaign and presidency, and repeatedly sued Trump to thwart his policies:
I have long said #Trump is temperamentally unfit to be #POTUS. As if to prove my point, he appointed #StephenBannon: https://t.co/6V2DwzjJUd

While President Trump announces “MAGA 2.0,” we’re fighting his “national emergency” in court. Next month, we’ll #KeepAmericaGreat by arguing to save the entire Affordable Care Act. #TrumpRallyOrlando

The Trump administration’s #CleanCarStandards rollback kills jobs. It hurts public health. It makes our air dirtier.
We can’t afford any of this. Not right now, not ever. Mr. President, we’ll see you in court. pic.twitter.com/1LGqbIjqy6
