Police have released the 911 transcript for the call from who they now know is the stepmother of state Sen. Nicole Mitchell (D), who called police to report a break-in at her home.
Mitchell was arrested for the break-in after being discovered in the basement, and now claims she was checking on her stepmother and retrieving her late father’s ashes and other personal items.
The call was made at 4:45 a.m., with the victim saying she “tripped over” the apparent burglar, and they ran down to the basement.
“I don’t know if he’s breaking out the back window or what,” she told the dispatcher.
Police found Mitchell in the basement dressed in all black with a flashlight that had a black sock over it and charged her with first-degree burglary. She later admitted she entered through the window.
Mitchell has tried to play off the incident as a family situation out of concern for her relative, but it sure seems like she was trying to steal her father’s effects from his wife.
