Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Democrat and former chairman of the now-defunct January 6 committee, is now lobbying for a bill to remove President Donald Trump’s Secret Service protection if he is found guilty in any of his criminal trials.
The bill dubbed the DISGRACED Former Protectees Act, or HR 8081, seeks to terminate Secret Service protection offered to any person once they are convicted “for a federal or state offense that is punishable for a term of imprisonment of at least one year.” A fact sheet highlighted that this measure applies to President Trump.
The Democrats have tied the former president in at least four criminal cases, among them the bogus “hush-money” charges filed by Manhattan Attorney General Alvin Bragg. The other three charges remain unclear as to whether it would be possible to hold a trial before the general election in November.
The former chair of the J6 committee emphasized that the current law does not detail how or whether the Secret Service protection would be applied if Trump or anyone else requiring protection is imprisoned.
“As a result, current law may serve as an impediment to the equal administration of justice and present logistical difficulties for both the Secret Service and prison authorities at the federal and state levels,” Thompson remarked.
The lawmaker argued that the legislation would “remove such conflicting lines of authority within prisons.”
“The purpose of this bill is to hand off inmate protection to relevant prison authorities rather than involve the Secret Service,” according to the fact sheet.
Meanwhile, the Washington Examiner’s political correspondent, Byron York, predicts that this bill is an attempt by the left to get the former president killed or ambushed.
“Thompson wants to take away Trump’s Secret Service protection if Trump is convicted on any of the 88 felony charges leveled against him by elected Democratic prosecutors and a Biden Justice Department appointee,” York quipped in a post on X.
“Obvious subtext here is that removing USSS would make it easier for someone to kill Trump, which is arguably the goal of Thompson’s bill, H.R. 8081.”
Benny Johnson echoed the same sentiment, “Democrats push legislation to guarantee a Trump assassination by stripping the president of his secret service protection.”
“The swamp is hellbent on keeping Trump out of office. First, they sued him. Then they prosecuted him. Then they tried to take him off the ballot. None of it worked, & now they’re trying to strip his Secret Service protection. I wonder what they’re rooting for?” Vivek Ramaswamy asked.
