On Sunday, Eric Trump warned the Supreme Court against ruling against his father, former President Donald Trump, in a debate over presidential immunity, arguing that the White House will become paralyzed by legal battles without it.
Fox News host Maria Bartiromo interviewed Trump following last week’s oral arguments in the Supreme court, where the former president claimed that his official acts should be immune from federal prosecution. The Associated Press reported that several justices were skeptical of the claim.
“This case has huge implications for the presidency, for the future of the presidency, for the future of the country,” said Justice Brett Kavanaugh, while Justice Samuel Alito said that “whatever we decide is going to apply to all future presidents.”
During the interview on “Sunday Morning Futures,” the younger Trump said “Well, God help us if they get it wrong. That’s what I take away. I know the system very, very well,” arguing that the “only people who are going to benefit are big law firms in Washington, D.C., because they are going to go after every single president”
Trump suggested that there would be prosecutions against former President Barack Obama over the Operation Fast and Furious controversy and the IRS going after conservatives, which occurred near the end of the Obama presidency, according to NPR.
He also suggested that President Joe Biden could become a target over several scandals that have occurred over the course of his presidency, including the raid on Mar-a-Lago, the scandal over cocaine being found in the White House, and the drawdown from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve prior to the 2022 midterm elections.
“I mean, where do you want to stop?” Trump asked, suggesting that even former President George W. Bush could face such prosecution over the scandal regarding alleged weapons of mass destruction prior to the war in Iraq, which ended up being unfounded, according to Pew Research.
“The only people that are going to win are going to be the lawyers in Washington, D.C. The floodgates are going to open. And I guarantee you Joe Biden will not have one foot outside of the White House doors before they start going after him legally, ruthlessly,” Trump said, arguing that presidents, “need immunity in this country. If they don’t, their entire tenure as president is literally going to be filled in depositions and subpoenas, like they have tried to do to my father for the last eight years.”
“We can’t have this legal lawfare in this country. We need a president to actually be able to function and run the United States of America,” he added.
Trump said he hopes the Supreme Court rules in favor of “absolute immunity,” arguing that without it, future presidents are “not going to be able to function as presidents of the United States.”
