REPORT: Documents reportedly leaked from White House reveal vetting concerns on over 100 nominees

White House officials in charge of screening nominees for key posts worried that Robert Lighthizer, President Trump’s selection for U.S. Trade Representative, had donated to Democrats and was a corporate lobbyist, according to leaked vetting documents. Trump officials worried that those ties could cost Lighthizer support in the Senate, which had to approve his nomination.

“While historically a Republican, Lighthizer has at times supported Democrats and has donated to certain Democratic office-holders, such as [Senators] Sander Levin and Ben Cardin,” read the documents, obtained by Axios. “Lighthizer’s employer, Skadden Arps, has donated millions to Democrat-affiliated groups in recent years.”

The article goes on to state the following:

His nomination ultimately proved to uncontroversial. Lighthizer was unanimously approved by the Senate Finance Committee in April, 2017 and by a 82-14 vote in the Senate the following month.

The report from Washington Examiner is based on a report by Axios published Sunday, which claimed they had obtained leaked documents from the White House on vetting concerns for over 100 Trump administration officials, including Ben Carson, Dan Coats, Betsy DeVos, Gary Cohn, Don McGahn, Elaine Chao, John Kelly, James Mattis, John Bolton, Mick Mulvaney, Nikki Haley, Rex Tillerson, Rick Perry, Robert Lighthizer, Ryan Zinke, Scott Pruitt, Rudy Giuliani and many others. Axios wrote:

Nearly 100 internal Trump transition vetting documents leaked to “Axios on HBO” identify a host of “red flags” about officials who went on to get some of the most powerful jobs in the U.S. government.

Why it matters: The massive trove, and the story behind it, sheds light on the slap-dash way President Trump filled his cabinet and administration, and foreshadowed future scandals that beset his government.
