President Donald Trump said he believes one of three current Democratic contenders will be his general election opponent in 2020.
For those following the Democratic primary process, the names won’t surprise you: former Vice President Joe Biden, and Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
Despite saying those three have the best odds at winning the Democratic primary, Trump was very down on anyone defeating him in 2020:
Trump, speaking on Fox News on Friday, escalated his attack on Biden, saying “everybody knows that Joe Biden does not have what it takes” and that former vice president struggles to attract crowds to his rallies.
Trump also said he doesn’t see Senator Kamala Harris or South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg as grabbing the nomination. Buttigieg “is a joke,” he said.
In more than one poll released this week, Warren displaced Sanders for second place. The move marks a noted rise in Warren’s recent polling. Some have attributed her rise to a series of policy proposals she’s released in recent months, but there’s no real evidence to definitively state that that’s the case.
Meanwhile, some political pundits are beginning to question whether Sanders has reached his ceiling of support. Polls that ask respondents for their “second pick” rarely show Sanders doing well among Democratic caucusgoers and primary voters who picked other candidates as their first choice.
Biden, on the other hand, has maintained his lead in the polls since before he officially entered the race in late April. That lead has slipped somewhat in terms of his margin, but virtually no recent poll has shown Biden trailing his fellow competitors.
