For the first time in decades, the pro-life movement is gaining serious traction in American politics. All over the country, states are passing new laws designed to limit the legality of abortion, including heartbeat bills that make abortion illegal once the baby’s heartbeat is detectable and, in the case of Alabama, even total bans on abortion altogether.
All of this is leading up to an almost certain battle in the Supreme Court – which is, in many ways, the main point of these new bills.
Emboldened by the fact that a conservative majority now sits on the Supreme Court for the first time in decades, pro-life lawmakers are eager to bring Roe vs Wade back in front of the Court – and they are passing bills designed to do just that. In the case of Alabama’s new abortion ban, Alabama legislators purposely made the bill as strict and controversial as possible in order to help guarantee that it is brought before the Supreme Court.
Both pro-life and pro-abortion activists alike know that the Roe v. Wade ruling was an overreach of the Supreme Court’s power and a poor interpretation of the Constitution. Those in favor of overturning this decision, therefore, are thrilled by the prospect of bringing it back to the SCOTUS once again, while those in favor of legal abortion are terrified by this prospect.
