President Joe Biden’s commencement address at Morehouse College, a historically black institution, has been met with a wave of harsh criticism from students and alumni. The speech, delivered on May 19, 2024, was intended to inspire the graduating class of 2024, but instead, it left many students feeling disheartened and disappointed.
During the speech, President Biden discussed various topics, including the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the state of democracy in the United States. However, many students felt that the speech was overly negative and failed to address the accomplishments of the graduating class. Instead, they felt that the speech was more focused on political and racial issues and did not provide the uplifting message that a commencement address should offer.
“It’s natural to wonder if democracy you hear about actually works for you,” Biden said. “What is democracy if black men are being killed in the street? What is democracy if a trail of broken promises still leave Black — Black communities behind?”
Biden added, “What is democracy if you have to be 10 times better than anyone else to get a fair shot? And most of all, what does it mean, as we’ve heard before, to be a black man who loves his country even if it doesn’t love him back in equal measure?

One student expressed his disappointment, stating, “the temperature on campus was expected given we had the president of the United States come and speak.”
He added, “Biden ‘seemed to be reflective and open to hear the feedback,’ but the speech itself was more of a political address than a commencement speech.”

“We’re not living in that world that he [Biden] is talking about.”

The negative reception of President Biden’s speech was not limited to the students at Morehouse College. Online, many conservative commentators and social media users expressed their disapproval of the speech, with some accusing the President of using the occasion to push a political agenda rather than to celebrate the achievements of the graduating class.
This incident comes as President Biden faces challenges in maintaining support among young voters and Black voters, groups that have been crucial to his political success. The negative response to his Morehouse College commencement address could potentially signal further erosion of support among these key demographics.
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, it remains to be seen how this incident will impact President Biden’s reelection campaign and his standing among young and Black voters.
