The day before Gov. Ralph Northam (D-VA) made national headlines for a yearbook photo that appeared on his medical school yearbook page depicting a man in blackface and another in a Ku Klux Klan hood, the Virginia Democrat made news for another reason.
A controversial late-term abortion bill had made the news that week, and radio show hosts at WTOP asked the governor about it. During his response to the question, Northam said the following:
NORTHAM: “If a mom is in labor – I can tell you exactly what would happen – the infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated, if that’s what the mom and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and mom.”
Those comments quickly went viral and triggered a harsh backlash, particularly from the pro-life community. The next day, Northam said he did not regret making those comments.
NTK Network submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the governor’s office to inquire about the kinds of responses Northam received in the aftermath of those comments. We limited our request to those responses submitted only on the day Northam made his abortion remarks. What we got back was 2,089 pages of people expressing their disgust.
“As a citizen of the state of Virginia and as a human being I am saddened and appalled that you would not stand up against late term abortion and the act of killing a baby following its birth,” one message read. “This is a new low for our society and for this state.”
“Your comments regarding allowing abortions to occur up to or shortly after birth are disgusting,” another comment read.
“I am sick to my stomach to hear what you are proposing when it comes to killing babies,” read a third. “What is the diabolical end game here?”
