The government shutdown is in its 25th day as President Donald Trump continues to push his demand of $5.7 billion in border wall funding, while Democrats are refusing to fund the wall, creating a debate on border security and uncertainty of when the shutdown will end.
The president invited both Republicans and Democrats to the White House on Tuesday for a lunch discussion to continue to talk about the “humanitarian and national security crisis” at the border and about reopening the government, however, Democrats boycotted the lunch and tossed the invitation.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said President Trump “has a proposal on the table that includes additional technology at ports of entry, allows minors from Central America to seek asylum in their home country, and physical barriers between ports of entry made of steel instead of concrete,” according to a White House pool report.
“As Senator Schumer and Speaker Pelosi refuse to negotiate, President Donald J. Trump and his team are working hard to find solutions to solve the humanitarian and national security crisis at the border and reopen the government,” she said.
Sanders listed out nine Republicans who attended the lunch, but no Democrats accepted the invite.
“It’s time for the Democrats to come to the table and make a deal,” Sanders added.
A week ago, President Trump met with top Democrats such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). However, the president walked out of the meeting after the Democratic lawmakers refused to negotiate on border wall funding, which he said was a “total waste of time,” as IJR Red reported.
Earlier Tuesday, the president called for Pelosi and Schumer to “stop playing political games” with border security.
