White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders swiped back at former FBI director James Comey for stating that the Trump administration wanted to “burn down the entire FBI.”
On Monday, Comey, a critic of President Donald Trump since losing his FBI position, was asked why he didn’t tell former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates about an interview with Michael Flynn, the president’s first national security adviser.
“Because I knew that if anything came of the interview, if it advanced our investigation, the attack from the Trump Administration would be that an Obama holdover had engineered it,” Comey responded.
“And so I had to make the decision, separate from her, to leave them with their only opportunity to challenge it would be to burn down the entire FBI. To my shock and horror, they’ve tried to do just that — in the face of silence from people in this building.”
Sanders rebuked Comey, saying Republicans should “stand up” to his “tremendous corruption,” adding that President Trump “did the country a service by firing him.”
“Republicans should stand up to Comey and his tremendous corruption – from the fake Hillary Clinton investigation, to lying and leaking, to FISA abuse, and a list too long to name. The President did the country a service by firing him and exposing him for the shameless fraud he is,” Sanders wrote on Twitter.

As IJR Red previously reported, other GOP lawmakers have shown anger toward the former FBI director.
Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) said, “Comey just thinks he’s always right, and … it doesn’t matter if everyone else concludes he did wrong,” Gowdy said. “He knows better. So that’s what it’s like to interview an amnesiac with incredible hubris.”
Despite Comey’s admission that he bypassed protocol when sending agents to interview Flynn in 2017, the former national security adviser will be sentenced on Tuesday for lying to the FBI.
