Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took his pleas to get Secret Service protection to the public after a third break-in at his private home.
Kennedy posted on X, “You can’t have a functioning democracy when candidates aren’t safe. Whether or not you support my campaign, please sign this petition urging the White House to grant me Secret Service protection.”

The post featured a three-minute video by Kennedy showing the man who was arrested for breaking into his house and one who showed up to one of his speeches armed and intending to harm him–only a few steps from where his father was assassinated.
Only candidate denied
Kennedy, an independent candidate for president, has been asking for protection since he began his campaign, first as a Democrat primary challenger and now as an independent, possible spoiler for President Joe Biden.
The Biden administration has denied Kennedy the protection multiple times in spite of threats to him and his family, the break-ins, and the fact that his father Robert F. Kennedy and uncle former President John F. Kennedy Jr. were both assassinated.
Kennedy pointed out that he is the only presidential candidate in modern history who asked for Secret Service protection and was denied.
He went on to name every presidential candidate back to Walter Mondale, and said that former President Barack Obama got protection two years before his first election–long before anyone knew he would be a candidate.
He called it a “naked political calculation” by Biden to deny a political opponent protection and pointed out that the Secret Service did a threat assessment that said he was at an elevated risk.
Worried about his family
Kennedy claimed he didn’t want the protection for himself, but for his family and others in his vicinity if an attack were to happen.
“I don’t spend time worrying about my personal safety, but I do worry about the safety of my family, and their sense of well-being. And about the safety of bystanders if there happens to be a more serious incident,” Kennedy said.
But it’s definitely not a good look for the federal government to let something bad happen to a presidential candidate that happens to be challenging the current president.
Former President Donald Trump has Secret Service protection because of his status as a former president, and will have it for the rest of his life unless he refuses.
Kennedy has been polling around 7-10% in recent polling, which makes him the biggest third-party candidate in the race by far.
It’s unconscionable that Biden keeps denying him protection, and I’d sign that petition myself even though I will obviously not be voting for him.
