ABC News President Kim Godwin resigned on Sunday night following an inquiry into her stewardship of the network.
The overseer of the network, Debra O’Connell, initiated a corporate probe into Godwin and other senior executives amidst mounting dissatisfaction among employees, unfilled top positions, and declining ratings for its flagship program, “Good Morning America.”
Allegations surfaced that Godwin prioritized her public image over the success of the news division, leaving O’Connell reportedly “shocked,” the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported.
WSJ added that in an email to staff on Sunday night, Godwin stated, “I have decided to retire from broadcast journalism.”
“Anyone who’s passionate about what we do knows there’s no other business like it, so this was not an easy or quick decision,” she continued. “But after considerable reflection, I’m certain it’s the right one for me as I look to the future and prioritize what’s most important for me and my family.”
Her message also emphasized that ABC News remains “No. 1” and that she departs “with [her] head held high and wish the entire team continued success,” per WSJ.
Staffers reportedly expressed dismay over Godwin’s leadership style and the numerous unfilled key positions, according to a CNN report on Friday.
Key figures such as former head of talent Galen Gordon and previous Washington bureau chief Jonathan Greenberger notably departed ABC News during her tenure.
Several executives were laid off in March 2023, reportedly causing “shock” throughout the newsroom.
CNN reported that Godwin characterized the downsizing as a “difficult time” for the network but assured her staff they were on “solid footing.”
The Daily Caller noted that liberals lauded ABC News’ decision to hire Godwin in January 2021, emphasizing her identity as a black woman.
Some critics argue, however, that amidst the celebration of her diversity, her professional skills were overlooked.
Godwin reportedly highlighted her experiences as a single mother during her introduction to the staff, as disclosed by the Hollywood Reporter (HR).
“Amid all that, I’m a capital-J Journalist,” Godwin told her team, as documented by HR.
“I say all of this to say that all of you need to bring your authentic selves to ABC News, and that will make us a better organization. Everybody has equal voice here,” she added.
O’Connell took the helm of Disney’s news division, a shift that came about in February through a restructuring, as reported by WSJ.
This move, ostensibly granting her authority over the network, was perceived by some as a step down for Godwin, who had previously held the reins in leading editorial meetings and taking a more hands-on approach in the newsroom.
WSJ highlighted that O’Connell expressed gratitude to Godwin, acknowledging her for utilizing her “respect for the brand and division” while guiding the team through significant global events.
Supporters of Godwin contend that she faces disproportionate scrutiny compared to other executives, attributing this disparity to her race, WSJ noted.
ABC News’ Chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl described Godwin as a “crazy workaholic” and argued that the accusations against her “certainly do not reflect the reality of who she is.”
