Trump Isn’t Alone in His Views on Political Correctness — Huge Number of Americans Agree It’s a Problem

Political correctness is one of President Donald Trump‘s least favorite concepts and it looks like he isn’t alone.

According to a new study by More in Common, 80 percent of participants saw examples of political correctness as a problem.

The study split respondents into seven groups: progressive activists, traditional liberals, passive liberals, the apathetic, moderates, traditional conservatives, and devoted conservatives.

The two most conservative groups made up 25 percent of the population. The two most liberal groups made up eight percent. They referred to the remaining 67 percent as the “exhausted majority.”

Of those in the group, the vast majority saw instances of political correctness to be problematic for the United States. While four out of five Americans from the general public find problems with political correctness, only 30 percent of those on the far-left held the same view.

Many of the respondents summed up their problem with political correctness with one sentiment: it has gone too far.

One respondent stated:

“I define [political correctness] as lying. Not saying what you really think. It really hurts everybody. This is why I said I am a big fan of [President] Trump because he is not politically correct.”

The results also found that age didn’t really impact a person’s view on political correctness, with 79 percent of those under the age of 24 reporting that they see political correctness as a problem.

The same could be said of race, with the majority of respondents of every race reporting that political correctness is a problem.

The only feature that created a large gap in viewing political correctness as a problem was education level.

Those who were highly educated were more likely to see political correctness as a non-problem.

Many individuals who have faced backlash for failing to meet politically correct standards have spoken out about the study, including James Damore, who was fired from Google for a memo about gender.

Although some on the right a celebrating the study, some on the left have criticized the study’s methods because the study did not ask respondents about political correctness directly, rather they drew conclusions from a series of questions that hint at the issue.

While the study may have failed to peg down the firm definition of political correctness, one finding is clear: the vast majority of Americans oppose extremism on either side.
