The Israeli military has recovered the body of a deceased hostage and the remains of another from Gaza, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office announced on Friday, according to CNN. The recovered body was identified as 56-year-old Ilan Weiss from Kibbutz Be’eri, who was of Hungarian origin.
According to the report, Weiss was killed while trying to defend Kibbutz Be’eri during the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023. He was initially believed to have been abducted, but on 1 January 2024 the Israeli government announced that he had been killed in the assault.
Weiss’s wife and daughter, Shiri and Noga, were taken hostage from Kibbutz Be’eri during the Hamas-led attack. They were released during the first ceasefire in November 2023. In December that year, they visited Hungary, where they met former President Katalin Novák and attended Faith Church to share their story and call for further support.
In a post on X, Israeli President Isaac Herzog offered his condolences and support to the Weiss family. ‘The horrors committed by Hamas, murder, torture, abduction, are crimes against humanity. The world must show moral clarity, apply pressure, and act for the immediate release of all the hostages,’ he wrote.
The remains of another hostage, not yet identified, were also recovered in the same operation, Netanyahu’s office said.
