The people of Florida—and indeed, all Americans—deserve better than wasteful government spending and lawless interference from activist judges. The so-called “Alligator Alcatraz,” a new immigration detention facility in Florida, cost $245 million of state taxpayer dollars and was meant to help enforce immigration laws and protect American communities. But now, just as the facility is set to become operational, a federal judge has ordered it to shut down. This is not just a slap in the face to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, but a direct assault on the rule of law and our nation’s sovereignty.
Let’s be clear: illegal immigration is a crisis, not just for our southern border, but for every state in this union. President Donald Trump, since returning to the White House in January, has once again made it his mission to secure our borders and deport criminal illegal aliens. The hardworking men and women of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are doing their job, but they need places to house detainees while the legal process plays out. That’s where facilities like Alligator Alcatraz come in.
Florida stepped up. The state didn’t wait for Washington bureaucrats to act. It used its own funds, on its own land, under its own emergency authority, to build a facility that could house thousands of detainees. It was a bold move, the kind of leadership we need more of. But now, thanks to a federal judge siding with environmental groups and tribal activists, that facility will sit empty—and our laws will sit unenforced.
The left complains about conditions in detention centers, but what they won’t admit is that the alternative is chaos. If we don’t have places to hold illegal immigrants, we end up with catch-and-release policies that turn our immigration laws into a joke. That’s exactly what the Democrats want: open borders and lawless cities. They’ll use any excuse—climate, race, human rights—to stop the government from doing its job.
Let’s talk about the money. Was $245 million a lot? Of course. But what price do you put on safety? On order? On the rule of law? And let’s not forget, some of that money was going to be reimbursed by FEMA. This wasn’t a handout or a boondoggle. It was an investment in security. Hiring corrections officers, setting up IT systems, building secure structures—all of it was necessary to create a facility that met the needs of modern immigration enforcement.
Yet now, because of one judge’s ruling, those millions are wasted. Contracts were signed. Workers were hired. Equipment was purchased. And now? It’s all being thrown away. The people of Florida should be outraged. Every taxpayer in this country should be angry. This is not how a constitutional republic is supposed to function.
The Constitution gives limited powers to the federal government. States have the right—and the duty—to protect their own borders and enforce the law. Federal judges are not kings. They don’t get to override a state’s lawful actions just because they disagree with the politics behind them. This is judicial activism at its worst, and it must be resisted.
President Trump’s administration is not backing down. They are already moving detainees to other facilities and continuing the work of deporting the worst of the worst. But without the support of the states, their job becomes harder. We should be encouraging states like Florida to take initiative, not punishing them for it.
What this moment demands is courage. Courage from our leaders, yes—but also from us, the people. We must stand up for our Constitution, for our laws, and for the idea that America is a nation with borders. If judges, activists, and left-wing radicals want to tear that down, then it’s up to us to stop them.
This is not just about a detention center in the Everglades. This is about whether we still believe in law and order—or whether we’re going to let the loudest voices win. The time to speak up is now.
