Former special counsel Jack Smith has been in a sort of limelight that just won’t quit for quite some time now, and it’s not letting up yet, thanks to a recent investigation.
Smith responded to news that he was being investigated by government watchdogs over his two attempted prosecutions of Donald Trump, as the Washington Examiner reported.
According to Smith, however, those are baseless inquiries, and investigators won’t find any evidence of misconduct or wrongdoing on his part.
This is, unironically, what Trump said about the investigations launched by Smith against him.
Smith’s legal team responds
Smith’s attorneys responded for him in a letter to the Office of Special Counsel, saying that the foundation of the investigation was “imaginary and unfounded.”
The attorneys from high-powered law firm Covington & Burling said that Smith was within the bounds of the Department of Justice’s rules governing his work.
“Mr. Smith’s actions as Special Counsel were consistent with the decisions of a prosecutor who has devoted his career to following the facts and the law, without fear or favor and without regard for the political consequences, not because of them,” his attorneys wrote.
Jack Smith is a partisan Democrat who weaponized the law against President Trump to help Dems win. I’ve asked the Office of Special Counsel to investigate his actions that likely violated the law to influence the election. pic.twitter.com/64v6U3Y0wH

Investigation details
Smith is being investigated by the Office of Special Counsel, which is an independent agency and unrelated to the Department of Justice.
It’s also not affiliated with the special counsels that have worked with Smith and others in the position he once held.
The investigating office works as a watchdog to deal with complaints lodged against the government or by whistleblowers.
It also investigates allegations of Hatch Act violations on the part of federal employees.
Moreover, the office has the ability to impose administrative punishments for wrongdoing, including fines and termination from continued government work.
