Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL) faced another embarrassing moment during a Monday press conference when cameras captured him speaking beneath a towering Trump sign while attempting to criticize the president’s crime-fighting proposals for Chicago.
The Democratic governor held the press conference in downtown Chicago to respond to Doanld Trump’s suggestion that the city might receive federal assistance to combat rising crime rates, similar to what Washington, D.C., could see.
During the event, Pritzker told reporters, “I know that I live rent-free in the president’s head.”
He continued, “And I wish he would spend some time in Chicago, so that he could see what a lovely city we have.” However, as cameras panned upward during his remarks, they revealed the massive “Trump” sign displayed prominently on Chicago’s Trump International Hotel and Tower directly above the governor’s location.
Eric Daugherty from Florida’s Voice website shared footage of the incident on social media platform X, where it quickly gained attention from users who noted the visual contradiction.
The press conference occurred after Trump suggested on Monday that he might deploy federalized National Guard troops to Chicago to strengthen law enforcement efforts in what he described as a “killing field,” according to Politico reporting.
Pritzker’s choice of location for the press conference drew criticism, as Chicago spans more than 200 square miles with numerous potential venues available.
Critics suggested that areas on the South or West sides, which house some of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods, might have provided a more appropriate backdrop for discussions about public safety.
Instead, the governor selected the upscale downtown area, positioning himself almost directly beneath the Trump Organization property and its prominent signage.

Social media users quickly recognized the irony of the situation, with many commenting on the visual symbolism of the scene.
Said one X user, “You can’t claim rent free when you’re literally framed by Trump’s building. Live action self-own.”
The incident highlights broader political tensions as Pritzker, similar to California Governor Gavin Newsom, is widely considered to be positioning himself for a potential presidential run in 2028.
Political observers suggest that Pritzker views opposition to Trump’s policies as a pathway to securing the Democratic Party’s nomination in future elections.
This approach involves challenging the current administration’s crime-fighting initiatives, despite ongoing concerns about public safety in major cities.
Chicago’s crime situation has been a persistent issue, with previous federal interventions showing measurable results during the first Trump administration.
The Justice Department deployed hundreds of federal agents to Chicago through Operation Legend during that period, with then-Attorney General Bill Barr reporting that the deployment reduced the city’s murder rate by half, according to 2021 WLS-TV reporting.
That federal assistance program concluded when the Biden administration took office in 2021, ending the coordinated law enforcement effort.
Pritzker made headlines earlier this month after an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert where the host brought up the controversial shapes of Illinois’s congressional districts.
Colbert began the segment by displaying a visual of the state’s current map, zeroing in on what he described as unusually drawn lines.
Colbert quickly turned serious when he asked, “Is this common for all states to do?”
Pritzker responded with what was supposed to be a joke, saying, “We hand it over to a kindergarten class and let them decide.”
Colbert pressed further: “Okay, and that’s the nonpartisan group that does this for you guys?”
Instead of clarifying or addressing the concern, Pritzker doubled down, failing to offer any evidence of independent oversight in the map-drawing process.
