President Donald Trump has restructured a number of international deals, from fending off foreign wars to trade deals to visa changes.
This time around, however, he’s trading in people, 600,000 of them to be exact, who will be allowed to come from China to study in the United States, as The Washington Examiner reported.
The White House announced on Monday that the president was working through relations with the Asian nation, and that easing restrictions on Chinese students was part of that negotiation.
The president is currently working on trade talks with the Chinese government, including threats of tariffs of up to 200% for Chinese-made magnets.
From the Commander in Chief
The tariff war rages on, with the administration imposing a 145% tariff on Chinese goods, and Beijing retaliating with a 125% tariff on U.S. exports. Apparently, however, people swapping is going just fine.
“I hear so many stories that we’re not going to allow their students,” Trump told reporters.
“We’re going to allow their students to come in. It’s very important, 600,000 students. It’s very important. But we’re going to get along with China,” he added. I don’t think we’re going to have a problem with that.
“China, intelligently, went and they sort of took a monopoly on the world’s magnets. It’ll probably take us a year to have them,” he said.
The Current Visa Status
As of May of this year, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that his office would “aggressively revoke” the visas of Chinese nationals, particularly if they are tied to the Chinese Communist Party or work in areas of sensitive research.
However, there are currently around 270,000 Chinese students enrolled in universities nationwide.
Not everyone is a fan of the Trump plan, however, and some of his supporters have even called out the president for the idea, saying that it will be bad for Americans.
Keep in mind every single one of those 600,000 Chinese students will be eligible for an OPT visa upon graduation.
This is so destructive to American educational opportunities for American citizens, and for American labor markets . https://t.co/ZFdhYtvcua
