A Tennessee mom has been charged with aggravated child abuse after she allegedly hit her daughter in a school parking lot because she was angry the girl missed the bus and she had to take her to school.
Staff at the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy said the student, whose name and age were not released, came to the principal’s office on August 19 “visibly upset” and described the incident.
The girl “disclosed that her mother, later identified as Misty Sue Coleman, became angry after the child missed the school bus,” the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office said. “While exiting the vehicle, the student stated the mother accelerated before the child was fully outside, striking the victim’s right ankle and driving away from campus without stopping.”
Deputies viewed surveillance video they said corroborated the girl’s statement. The video showed the mother’s vehicle “striking the child and leaving the scene with the door still open.”
Officials did not comment on the girl’s condition.
The school serves students in grades 6 through 12, according to its website.
Coleman appears to have bonded out, according to jail records, and is due again in court on September 3.
