Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is threatening to pull federal funding for three states if they do not comply within 30 days with enforcing the English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirement for commercial truck drivers.
Duffy said the new move against Washington, California and New Mexico is “about keeping people safe on the road.”
The move comes after an illegal immigrant was accused of making an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike, resulting in a crash that killed three people.
Harjinder Singh, the undocumented truck driver accused of causing the crash, entered the U.S. illegally in 2018 and now faces multiple criminal charges. He has been denied bond and labeled a flight risk after fleeing to California the day after the crash.
